Erling Haaland prepares to join Manchester City after undergoing treatment | Manchester

Erling Haaland is set to become a Manchester City player this week after he passed a medical and told Premier League champions Borussia Dortmund they would make provision for the 21-year-old’s release. The fee is understood to be well below the €75m (£64m) widely reported.

The German club is expected to announce the deal soon, after Haaland informed them of his desire to leave after two and a half years. Personal terms have been agreed between the player and City. Haaland will earn a base salary of around £350,000 a week with big bonuses and prepare to sign a five-year contract.

For Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, the deal ends his search for a long-term successor to the club’s record scorer, Sergio Aguero. Guardiola began searching for a replacement for the Argentine last summer when he left for Barcelona. At the time, the first target was Tottenham’s Harry Kane, but City were left out of any potential deal by Daniel Levy, chairman of the north London club, who estimated Kane at £150m.

Guardiola’s desire to also acquire Jack Grealish, who cost City a record £100m when he joined from Aston Villa last summer, has made Kane’s transfer impossible. This season, Guardiola has turned his focus to Haaland. The City boss admires the Norwegian, who has scored 85 goals in 88 games for Dortmund, but wanted to make sure he had the ability to match City’s smooth passing style.

When Real Madrid – who had been Haaland’s first destination – decided to make Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe their first summer target, he paved the way for City to boost their interest in Haaland after Guardiola gave the green light for the move.

This season, City played the majority of its matches with the “false number 9”. This was usually one of Kevin De Bruyne, Raheem Sterling, Phil Foden or Bernardo Silva with Gabriel Jesus also occasionally in the position. City have scored 89 goals in the Premier League this season, the highest in the league, with three games remaining so far in the crucial matches in which they missed many chances, and the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid was a prime example. City won 4-3 last night, but lost the comeback 3-1 to come out 6-5 on aggregate.

Haaland is a proven top scorer: 134 goals in 182 career matches with 36 assists. There was concern that his massive physique – Haaland at 6ft 4in – could cause injuries and he missed 26 games for Dortmund between November 2020 and January 2022. However, he already has 181 big games and City are confident he will be successful. .

One player unlikely to join City is Paul Pogba. The Frenchman shares the same agency with Haaland, and City has explored the possibility of signing the Manchester United midfielder. The 29-year-old is available on a free transfer if he leaves United at the end of the season, as expected.

Pogba is believed to be satisfied with City’s interest, but Guardiola and City’s sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, believe his preference is to sign with another team. Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain are among those holding Pogba’s interests.

Guardiola’s interest in Pogba has caught the eye in some quarters as he was often confused during his six years at United. However, since Fernandinho will leave City when his contract expires at the end of June, the coach is intent on strengthening his midfield division.
