Weekly Watch: Football teams are ready for the last week of the regular season | High school sports news

Mark Parker Standard sports reporter

While much of the high school sports scene has entered the postseason, there are still two major girls’ soccer games to determine the conference championships.

Post-season previews will be posted throughout the week, but here’s a look at the notable football matches.

East Lincoln (tonight)Hickory enters the week with a 0.013 percentage point lead over East Lincoln in the Western Hills 3A Athletic Conference standings. East Lincoln (9-1-2 WFAC) has another game to play after tangling with the Red Tornadoes, but the only game that will matter is a rematch with Hickory (11-2 WFAC) at home tonight.

In the first part of the Homeland Play series held in Hickory last Thursday, the visiting Mustang trailed 1-0 in the first half, but scored three goals in the second half to defeat Red Tornado. This game essentially forms a winner-takes-all match tonight, as East Lincoln plays their final game on Tuesday against Statesville (1-12 WFAC).

If Hickory defeats Mustangs, St. Stephens (9-2-2 WFAC) will have a chance of ending a tie for second place should they win at North Iredale Stadium on Tuesday.

The three schools will play statewide playoffs, with Fred T. Foward and North Iredale joining the party. North Lincoln is just outside the bubble, ranking 34th in the latest RPI ranking. The Knights (5-11-2 overall) concluded their season.

Watoga at Hebriten (Tuesday)

At the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference, Watauga (8-0 NWC) wrapped up the auto show for the state championship among the 4A schools and Hibriten (7-1) did the same among the 3A schools. This leaves the Conference Championship yet to be decided between the top two in the league.

Watoga beat the Panthers 3-0 in the first meeting just before spring break, and a win over Lenoir in the rematch would decide the conference title. Should Hibriten win, the conference championship will go down to the final for each school later in the week. As Hebreton travels to Alexander Central (3-14 overall) on Thursday, the Pioneers play at Freedom (11-4-1 overall, 5-3 NWC) on Wednesday. If Watauga loses at Hibriten, the Patriots will have a chance to spoil the Pioneers bid for a combined championship and finish in a tie for second, if they defeat Ashe County (5-11-4, 0-8) on Monday.

Watauga, Hibriten and Freedom (3A) will be the country teams that will exit the conference.

Lincolnton at Maiden (tonight)

In the Catawba Valley 2A Athletic Conference, Lincolnton (11-1 CVAC) needs a win to claim the championship. Wolves will get a chance to sponsor business on Monday against the firstborn runner-up (9-2-1 CVAC). However, even if the Blue Devils win or draw, Lincoln can still finish the title with a win or a draw at home against West Lincoln.

If Maiden loses tonight, he will likely come second in the Blue Devils game at Newton-Conover (8-3-1) on Wednesday.

The three teams listed above, along with the Bandys, will contest the Status 2A qualifiers. East Burke (6-9-2 overall) is in the bubble with an RPI rating of 32 with 32 teams earning spots in the West Region category.

Draughn (4-7-3 overall) is on the cusp of debuting in a playoff game in girls’ football since 2010. The Wildcats are currently ranked 25th in the 1A West RPR standings and will conclude the season today without a win (0- 7-1) Mountain Heritage .

Button (7-7-5 overall) finished his season and is currently out of the field for 32 teams in the 2A West class. The Panthers are 34th in the 2A West RPI.
