Ruthless Virat Kohli: A sack of golden ducks, an unwanted record and an extraordinary struggle for form

Virat Kohli’s total run of the season in the Indian Premier League is 216 out of 12 after scoring his third Golden Duck of the season (his sixth in the tournament) at the weekend against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Three gold ducks, three singles and just one over 50 isn’t something you’d associate with a Kohli-caliber person. After all, he is one of the most successful speculators in India, with over 10,000 passes under his belt in limited formats.

After failing to open his tally against SRH, the 33-year-old equaled an unwelcome record of owning the most Golden Ducks for a player in a single season (3). He became the 13th player to score 3 gold ducks in an IPL season.

Some of the other names on this unwanted list are Amit Mishra, Ashish Nehra, Suresh Raina, Rashid Khan, Rohit Sharma and Nitish Rana.

Earlier, Kohli, who relinquished the leadership of Royal Challengers Bangalore before this season, had scored the Golden Ducks in – 2008 against the Indians in Mumbai, 2014 against Punjab Kings, 2017 against Kolkata Knight Riders, 2022 against Lucknow Super Giants, and SunRisers Hyderabad.

Kohli even tried his luck to reclaim his form by opening against Bangalore after a barren run in third place. His first two gold ducks – against Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad – came third while facing off against the bowlers.

After Kohli’s first duck in the tournament, former India coach Ravi Shastri suggested that the former national team captain take a break from competitive cricket.

“I’m going straight to the main man here. Virat Kohli is overcooked. If anyone needs a break, it’s him,” Shastri told the tournament announcers. In July) or before England, he needs a break because he hasn’t been in cricket for six to seven years and you don’t. I want to lose that with a fried mind.”

Since then, Kohli has added two more golden ducks.

Former England hitter Kevin Petersen said Kohli needs to take his attention off social media to re-energize himself. β€œWhen the stadiums are full again, you guarantee him a place on that side for the next 12, 24 or 36 months,” Petersen said. β€œTell him, You are our man. We know you will meet our needs.”

He admitted that it would be difficult for Kohli if it was “totally fried”.
