San Angelo Central High School Girls’ Soccer players Jasmine Gonzalez and Kaitlyn Freeman shared the spotlight again Monday night at a double signing ceremony for the college at the San Angelo Stadium field home.
A 5-foot-2 defensive tackle, Gonzalez will take her talents to Bethany College in West Virginia.
Freeman will soon remain to play for Lubbock Christian University, which competes with Angelo State University in the Lone Star Conference.
The 5-5 midfielder will join Lady Cats, Madison Mayben, Keren Moffat and Teegan Wilson in the Lady Chaps squad. Faith Webber, a former club player from San Angelo, is also on the team.
Freeman had her signing party last November, but it has become a norm for Lady Cats footballers to have group signings in May.
“Caitlin and Jasmine have been great ambassadors for the Lady Cat football programme,” said Central coach Ben Henry. “They are two little personalities – hard-working and care about the business in the field and in the classroom, and they are just wonderful young ladies all around.
“I am very excited about them and I am also very proud of them. I know they will do a great job in their colleges, and the schools are lucky to have them.”
Gonzalez has spoken about being too far from home to continue her football career.
“I’m terrified,” she said, “but I’m going to do it for the sport I love.”
She is excited to play with the Swedes.
“The campus was beautiful, and then they also got my major that I go to after college and football was kind of like a signature bonus,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez and Freeman helped the quarterbacks finish the season 16-4-2 and 10-0-2 in District 2-6A to win the league title.
The Lady Cats lost to Fort Worth Eaton in the qualifying round.
“Of course, you always want to go further every year,” Gonzalez said. “But even though we haven’t come that far, I couldn’t have asked for a better team to play with and better girls to keep each other going.”
As for Freeman, she repeated everything she loved about the LCU.
“I loved the team and the coach and how well they treated me when I was there,” Freeman said. “I loved the school and the campus and thought they were right for me.”
Looking back at her central career, Freeman says what she’ll remember most is “just being a part of the team and getting along with all my teammates and loving the coaches and really getting close to the Lady Cat family.”
