Cardinals vs. Royals – Game Summary – May 3, 2022

Kansas City, Mo. — Bobby Witt Jr. hit his first major league game at home, Brad Keeler fired the closing ball in the seventh inning, and the Kansas City Royals beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 on Tuesday night to end the four-way game. Game Loss Series.

Witt connected with Homer solo in the second half. The award-winning rookie extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

“I thought he was in the gap to double,” Witt said. “I should have hit that first throw that was right down the middle. It’s always good to get the first thing out of the way, no matter what.”

Witt got two hits, two from the RBI and scored two goals. MJ Melendez had huge success on his debut in the league and Edward Olivares had hit four goals out of 15 for the Royals.

Keeler (1-2) allowed four hits in 6 1/3 runs, walked three times and hit two. A runner was allowed in each run except the sixth, but not more than one through the seventh.

“Whenever they got on the field, I tried to hit the ground and do the pitches,” Keeler said. “My fastball wasn’t (as good) as it could have been, but being able to go in and out of the slider was a big deal for me today.”

Witt smashed Dakota Hudson (2-2), posting a 0-1 change of 417 feet into the stands left center.

Witt came in fourth with no sprinters wanting and ran into corners and settled into a double that scored a run.

Hudson left after issuing a seventh-round lead to Nikki Lopez with the Royals leading 2-0. Olivares had an RBI problem and Andrew Benentende, Wyatt Merrifield, Wyatt and Michael Taylor were also RBI’s in the inning.

“I was really happy to see (the seventh in five games) that we had the opportunity early on and let it slip through our fingers,” Kansas City coach Mike Matheny said. “Brad was great. It might not have been the sharpest thing, but he was really good.”

Cards had an eighth-place run on Tyler O’Neill’s single.


SS Cardinals Edmundo Sosa, along with three members of the Cardinals medical staff and one club host, have tested positive for COVID-19. Souza has been placed on the list of those infected with COVID-19.

Cardinals: C Yadier Molina got scratched by a non-COVID illness. Head coach Oliver Marmol was confident he would be back in the squad on Wednesday. Molina has been replaced in the starting line-up by Andrew Kneisner.

OWs: 1B Carlos Santana had a late scratch with a sore right ankle. His place in the squad took Ryan O’Hearn.

The Cardinals and the Royals will conclude their two-game series on Wednesday with an afternoon contest. The game was originally scheduled to start at 6:10 PM, but the weather forecast has led to the change. The Cardinals will send RHB Adam Wainwright (2-3, 4.00 PM) to the hill. The Royal Family will face LHP Kris Bubic (0-2, 10.50 ERA).
