Exclusive to Jose Mourinho: Manchester United, Roma’s plans for the second year and its future amid the Newcastle links | football news

Jose Mourinho talks exclusively to Sky Sports about Manchester United, his relationship with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Chris Smalling’s improvement, and plans his second year in Rome and his future after his links with Newcastle.

Roma will meet Feyenoord in the Europa League final on May 25, after defeating Leicester in the semi-finals. Roma have not won a European championship in 50 years, since beating Blackpool in the FA Cup in 1972, but Mourinho will now seek to complete the group after his previous Champions League and Europa League victories.

While you are in Italy to cover the Europa League matches, Sky Sports Gary Cottrell spent time with Mourinho and discussed a range of topics…

Jose on Manchester United, Mkhitaryan and “Smoldini”…

“we [Mkhitaryan] Together, they won three titles [Community Shield, League Cup, Europa League] At Man United, unfortunately the last three titles of Man United. I say “unfortunately” because I love the club very much and I wish the best for the club.

“We won three titles together, so it went well. In season two, we were a little different together. The thing that makes me really happy is that in the beginning people tried to go ahead in the passive mode and say, ‘Mickey with Jose doesn’t stand a chance,’ Jose is the type who when things go wrong and it doesn’t go well again’, the exact opposite has been proven. We were very mature and honest with each other at that time even with Mino (Raiola), rest in peace Mino, the discussion was very good.

“I always try to be very frank with the players. I saw my project in Roma need a player like Mickey, I also understand the importance of Mickey in the group and he is having a great season.

We take a look at Mourinho’s best and greatest moments in the Premier League

“He helps us overcome all the problems we have as a small team. Mickey was playing everywhere, as a winger, when he was 10 and then we had Covid injuries and situations and he became a midfielder like never before in his life.

“I’m very happy with Mickey and I’m happy that people understand with me that it’s not all black or white. It’s possible for a player to come up with a different relationship than it was in the past.”

“With Chris (Smalling) it’s about finding a balance on his body that allows him to play regularly. He has the experience, knowledge and qualities as a defender as there is. Also tactically in terms of the system the team plays and the defensive organisation.

“Chris is doing very well this season, playing at a level that makes me really happy about him because he is a great player. He was recognized in Italy as ‘Smoldini’, half Smalling, half (Paolo) Maldini.”

Roma coach Jose Mourinho has said he will not leave the club in the summer as he is not looking for a change, despite speculation that has linked him to a possible move to Newcastle.

“We want to try to get into the Champions League, but when you look at the level of investment in Inter, Milan and Juventus, you realize that three of these sites have to be closed. There is a fourth place, last season it was Atalanta, this season it is Napoli, can we get there next season? ?I think we can.

“In this second part of the season, after the January market, our performance was small [changes] Enough to improve the team. I’m not as lucky as some coaches who can buy whatever they want. By doing things with standards we can improve things. Next season, after this year of work and development at every level, I think we have a chance and that is the next target for next season.”

Could Nemanja Matic be linked with Jose for the third time?

“I never like to talk about players, I don’t think it’s good for me, the club, and the players. Everyone knows my relationship with Nemanja, he’s one of the players that I have my confidence in. We won together, we fought together at United. Too.”

“He’s a great player but that’s the kind of answer that’s not good for me or the player.”

Next season I’m here

Jose Mourinho runs Roma

“At the moment, it’s all very quiet because I have two more years on the contract. The club didn’t come close to me to try to extend so they wouldn’t put me in a situation of accepting or not accepting. Everything is calm and stable and that is how it should be.

“I have to finish the season as best we can and start next season 100 per cent because I’m not looking for a change, people know that. I couldn’t leave the club in my second season, I couldn’t do it to the club, and I’m here next season.

“I have learned what Newcastle is and how I love the club so much through the eyes and heart of Sir Bobby. I am very happy they have found their stability. Eddie (Howe) is doing well, the club has provided the tools for change in the January market and I wish them well.”
