Daniel James was sent off after 24 minutes of a bad challenge to Mateo Kovacic, which left the Croatian unable to continue.
A medical emergency at the end of Chelsea saw the match halted before the break, as he was later fortunately declared stable and receiving treatment by Sky Sports.
Romelu Lukaku finished scoring in the 83rd minute. The Belgian took his time on the ball before finishing emphatically against Meslier with his 15th goal of the season.
Here are five things Absolute Chelsea Lessons learned from Wednesday’s match:
1) effective mountain
Mason Mount put in a great match, once again showing his class, as well as his importance to the Chelsea team. A superb goal and an assist for Pulisic’s goal capped Mount’s impressive performance, but his work rate caused problems for Leeds’ defense throughout the night. When Mount was on the ball, he looked dangerous, his energy and movement was something Chelsea missed against Wolverhampton, and that was evident today.

2) Kovacic may be absent on Saturday
It is too early to confirm the severity of the injury Kovacic suffered after the intervention of Daniel James. All that can be said is that the player’s reaction, as well as the fact that he dislocated him soon after, indicates that the injury could be bad. That would be a huge loss for Chelsea, he looked racy in the first 20 minutes of the match and was key for Chelsea in complete control of the match early on. The midfield battle will be important against Liverpool, and not playing Kovacic will not be a relief for the Reds. We hope it isn’t too dangerous.
3) Lukaku is currently looking for a challenge level
Romelu Lukaku is emerging as a player who could make a real impact at the club in the next few seasons. Another strong performance from the Belgian, after two goals at the weekend against Wolverhampton, suggests that after a difficult season, he may finally show why Chelsea paid him such a large sum of money last summer. His goal in the 83rd minute was a reward for a great performance. After no league goals since December, he now has three in his last two games.
4) Tuchel is one of the best coaches Chelsea have ever had
With Chelsea’s inconsistent form lately, there has been some scrutiny on the job Thomas Tuchel has been doing. Tonight I reminded People of why he should stay at Chelsea if the Blues are going to have any success in the near future. With a team exhausted due to injuries all season, and the lack of performance of players, the German managed to lead his team to two finals in the domestic cup and win two cups. The night was a tough test against a team fighting for survival, and his team selection was perfect to nullify any threat Leeds may have faced early on.
5) A very important win
With most of Chelsea’s focus focused on the FA Cup Final, the significance of tonight’s match seemed to be undermined a bit. This win tonight puts Chelsea on the brink of securing the Champions League for next season, and puts them four points behind Arsenal and eight points behind Tottenham just two games ago. Good performance and a great win, as the Blues now look towards the FA Cup Final.
