Callaway & Sand have chosen to name their first-of-its-kind softball team the first of the Big Ten

Piscataway, NJ – Two Scarlet Knights earn their first ever Rutgers softball team honors. graduate Gabriel Callaway A student in the second year Kylie Sand Both were praised with the first team honored at all conferences in a vote by the league’s coaches.

This is the first time since joining the Big Ten in 2014-15 that a baseball team has earned its first All-Big Ten team honors and the third time two Scarlet Knights have received All-Big Ten awards.

Callaway, in her third season at the Rutgers, ranks in the top ten in six big stat categories including first in fly-aways (6), third in RBIs (47), eighth in home runs (10) and base percentage (.478) and ninth in average hitting (.381) and hits. Her 10 home runs this season brought her “On The Banks” total to 17, which is just one long ball shy of breaking into Rutgers’ top ten all-time. Meanwhile, Callaway’s 47 RBIs, tied for second place on the single-season leader’s list. The Mobile, a native of Alabama, has been responsible for three encounters this season in victories over Colgate, Sienna and Holy Cross. She was named Top Ten Player of the Week to assist Rutgers in their first-ever win over Minnesota. In the inaugural Big Ten Weekly Series with the Golden Gophers, Callaway hit .714 (5 vs. 7) including three doubles and four grand slams along with three runs and seven RBIs. The five RBIs notched their 9-2 win over Minnesota, their most-drawn this season.

Sand, who joined the Crimson Knights this season, ranks in the top ten in seven big stat categories including second in batting (66), third in base steals (22), and fourth in batting average (.400) and running (48), sixth in percentage based on (.498) and eighth in doubles (12). She’s the first Crimson Knight since 2011 to reach 0.400 or higher in a single season, and among the one-season Rutgers leaders, 66 hits tied her to third place and her 22 base steals. In addition, 48 rounds led by her team helped the Scarlett Knights score the most points since 2015. Sand was responsible for three rounds in 2022 in victories over Fairfield, Drexel and Monmouth. The Norco, California native was named Big Ten Softball Player of the Week after leading the RU to a 5-1 week in the Rutgers Softball Championship behind a batting average of 0.619 (13 for 21) with 10 runs, eight RBI and six stolen rules.
