Chicago Bears Makeover VWR May Soon Include Another New Name

People wondered if the Chicago Bears might consider more veteran experience for the broad reception position after the massive influx of newbies over the past week. It seems they may be right. Just not in the way they had hoped. ESPN’s Adam Shifter reports that one of the recipients was visiting the team on Wednesday. However, it wasn’t Jarvis Landry, T.Y. Hilton, or Cole Beasley. Instead, they seem interested in Keith Kirkwood.

The 27-year-old is an unoccupied former free agent outside Temple. He signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2018 and made some nice contributions as a rookie. Hopes were high that he would take a step forward from there, but the 2019 and 2020 seasons were marred by injuries. The hamstring in the first year and the second clavicle. By the time he was healthy in 2021, the Carolina Panthers had barely used him.

He is now hoping for a fresh start elsewhere.

It’s not hard to see why GM’s Ryan Bowles is interested. Kirkwood was dubbed the overweight potential and the speed at which he dropped out of college. Not to mention his reputation as a cool guy in the locker room. He is 6’3 and ran 4.45 in a 40-yard dash. His tape also shows an excellent pair of hands for making tough shots. It’s entirely possible that the Chicago Bears will see untapped potential in him. The big hit was his lack of road-going prowess. Something he had a chance to improve after four seasons in the NFL.

Perhaps all he needs is a proper chance to earn playing time. The Bears have a wide open competition on their roster with Darnell Mooney, Byron Pringle and Velus Jones as their only locks to take picks at this point. Kirkwood will be in battle with men like Equanimeous St. Brown and David Moore for a coveted fourth place likely to get important shots each week. It may not be the perfect name fans wanted to hear, but Kirkwood will at least bring some experience and return to the table.
