Russell played the quarterback for the Colorado Buffaloes from 1993 to 1996 where he won the Putkus Award and was the first American team in its freshman year. Russell was then drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fourth round in 1997. Multiple knee injuries interrupted his career as Russell retired in 1999 before returning to Boulder, Colorado, as an assistant coach in 2000.
During his playing days with the Lions, Russell became friends with Tom Dimitrov, who later hired him to explore the New England Patriots in 2001. Russell also worked as an area explorer between 2003-2005 for the Patriots before being hired by the Eagles in 2006.
Russell served as a Western Regional Scout for Philadelphia from 2006-2007 before serving as a National Scout the following season.

Ex-Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels hired Russell as the Denver Boy Scouts manager in 2009. In 2012, Russell was promoted to Player Personnel Manager where he served as John Elway’s right-hand man from 2012 to 2019. Russell officially retired from the position of deputy Chief to the players at the conclusion of the 2020 campaign, after Elway walked out the door when he stepped down as GM.
“At the time, Russell wanted to spend more time with his family, despite doing some part-time scouting for new Denver general manager George Patton during the early part of the 2021 season,” Cleese said.
While his official address and contract details are still unknown at this time, it is said that Russell will be able to work and explore from his Denver home for the Eagles.
Along with his close friend Elway, Russell also played an instrumental role in the hiring of Patton. Button promoted Darren Moggi to assistant GM last year – he had taken over as Russell’s former.
