Game Summary: Cardinals lose to Orioles 5-3

DeJong is sent off while the Cardinals assess their struggling players.

St. Lewis – The Cardinals’ biggest news from Tuesday was the decision to pick struggling short-term player Paul DeJonge to Memphis, the first time the former All-Star had not been on the Major League roster in nearly five years.

DeJong, who scored just 0.130 after disappointing seasons in 2020 and 2021, isn’t the only Cardinal’s player who hasn’t gotten off to a good start this year.

That was evident again Tuesday night when the Cardinals returned to Busch Stadium and lost the opening game of a three-game series to the Baltimore Orioles.

The Cardinals were only closed on two strokes during the first five rounds before Harrison Bader hit a double in the home garden.

Here’s how the game fell apart:

In the dish: Homer Bader, bouncing insanely from the wall in the middle, drove to Yadier Molina, who opened the inning with a double … The Cardinal received only one hit until the ninth, when Brendan Donovan hit his first Homer job. Donovan got his start at shortstop…. Juan Ypez is back in DH again and has expanded his hit streak to the first six games of his career with a single.

on the pile: With Adam Wainwright staying on Covid protocol, and with the decision not to leave Miles Mikulas on regular rest, Cardinals Bucky Naughton started against the Orioles. He gave up two homers that produced Baltimore’s first three runs, pitching 3 1/3 runs…Kodi Whitley and Nick Wittgren gave up the other runs.

Basic stats: Homer Bader was the first homer inside the park by Cardinals since Fernando Fina in 2001 in Milwaukee and the first in St. Louis since Vince Coleman in 1985.

not worth anything Wainwright is not expected to play in the home court, which runs through Sunday…not counting games When he was on rehab duties, DeJong hasn’t played a game in the minor leagues since June 14, 2017…Kramer Robertson was brought in from Memphis to take it His place is on the list, but his stay is likely to be short. Edmundo Sosa played on a Tuesday in Springfield, collected two songs, and could be activated as soon as Thursday… by starting at shortstop. Donovan became the first major tournament player since 1900 to earn the first four starts of his career in a different position.

I look ahead: Mikolas, with an extra day of rest, is scheduled to begin Wednesday night for Game Two of the series.
