The Miami Dolphins get their fourth Sunday night soccer game since 2006

Did you know? The only team that has appeared in Sunday Night Football less than the Miami Dolphins is the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Miami Dolphins have gotten a little love from the scheduling committee when it comes to prime time games, and they deserve it. Leagues and networks prefer to broadcast matches between competing and exciting teams, and dolphins have not been for a long time.

They’ll have a Monday night game here and there for sure. And everyone and their mom play Thursday nights. But their Sunday night backpacking list feels like a wasteland.

Sunday Night Football began broadcasting on NBC in 2006, and quickly became the number one game of the week. After a long reign, Monday Night Football took second place, with everything about SNF Broadcasting feeling superior. Production, broadcasters and games all looked like the highlight of the week.

Dolphins fans don’t really know what it feels like to have their team play under the brightest lights. Since 2006, Miami has featured on the SNF pathetically three times, the fewest of any team other than the Jaguars (2).

How hard is that to believe, by comparison? The team with the most appearances is the Cowboys with a score of 54. Well, Team America, that makes sense. The Patriots have 41. Bears have 30, Redskins/leaders 19. Even Lions have 9 SNF games, and Browns have 5.

Not only do the Miami Dolphins have only three Sunday Night games under their belt, but one of them was actually a Thursday night contest, which was the opening game to broadcast back in 2006. They already had a fourth SNF game scheduled for Week 12 in 2009 against the Patriots, but was dissuaded in favor of the Vikings/Cardinals match.

But perhaps this was all for a good reason. The Dolphins are 0-3 in their illustrious history at Sunday Night Football.

They have a chance to turn the tide, finally, in 2022. Miami will host the Pittsburgh Steelers’ game in week seven on October 23, taking place in front of a national audience on NBC. Expect dolphin fans to be at their full throat.

The Steelers are always a tough game, but they may be in transition now that quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is long retired, and the Dolphins should look to cash in if Pittsburgh struggles to start the season. It would be a winnable game for Miami, especially playing at home, but the team led by Mike Tomlin is one to be feared.

There will also be a familiar face on the corresponding sideline. Former Dolphins coach Brian Flores has been hired as a defensive assistant by the Steelers and will no doubt be looking to stir up controversy over the midfielder, with whom his strained relationship became public after his departure.

Dolphins themselves can be first-class entertainment. There was a rapid flow of their attack, and their defense should remain one of the best units in the league, giving them a chance to be one of the teams to watch this coming season. Don’t look now, but the NFL could end up regretting not giving Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill another primetime game or two.

We will of course have to wait and see how both teams fare early in the season, given Miami’s treacherous schedule over the first four games. But the Scheduling Gods finally blessed us with an elusive look on Sunday football, and we Miami Dolphins fans will be forever grateful.
