The Japan Baseball League announced today the lighting of the Tokyo Tower, in celebration of the Los Angeles Angels/Hitter named Shohei Ohtani as the MVP of the season. Tokyo Tower will be illuminated in the colors of the Los Angeles Angels with a congratulatory message to be displayed on the main deck at 17:17 (5:17 p.m. in Tokyo on Friday) based on Ohtani’s jersey number “17.” The winner of the 2021 Major League Baseball Player of the Year (MVP) award was chosen by voting by 30 journalists who are members of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Otani is the second Japanese player to receive this honor after Ichiro Suzuki in 2001. In addition to receiving the 2021 AL MVP award, Ohtani, who became the 16th winner of the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award in October, will be honored with a new MLB video the site launched today. And he was honored with two GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ titles.
The two Guinness World Records titles officially read as follows:
(1) The first MLB player to hit over 100 runs and score over 100 pitchers, 100+ RBIs, hits and runs as pitchers in a single season is Shohei Ohtani (Japan), playing for the Los Angeles Angels (USA) during a league season Baseball 2021.
(2) The first player to start an MLB All-Star game as pitcher and designated hitter is Shohei Ohtani (Japan) at Coors Field in Colorado, USA, on July 13, 2021.
The Tokyo Tower lighting will also be broadcast live on MLB’s Japanese TikTok and Twitter accounts MLBJapan. MLB is also launching a new global website to celebrate Ohtani’s MVP announcement in four editions with graphics in English, Spanish, Japanese and Mandarin. The design is the second MLB issue to highlight Ohtani’s record-breaking season with the debut of the All-Star: Sho-Time game. The content will be broadcast on MLB media outlets (MLB.com, MLB Network, MLB.TV, MLB and MLB global social media accounts) as well as ESPN and via OTT platforms.
To celebrate MLB’s first collaboration with the Tokyo Tower, consumer products featuring a collaborative design featuring the Los Angeles Angels, Shohei Ohtani and Tokyo Tower will be launched at the official MLB Japan Online Store (https://www.mlbshop.jp/) and the Official Tokyo Tower Store .

As a hitter, Ohtani scored 103 points, 26 doubles, eight triples, 46 home runs, 100 RBI, 96 walks, 26 base steals and a 0.965 OPS. Become the only player in MLB history with 45+ homers, 25+ steals, and five or more three times a season. On the hill, the 27-year-old right-hander went 9-2 with 3.18 ERA and 156 strokes (130.1 IP) in 23 starts, limiting his opponents to a .207 average.
