Train Like Beckham: Workout Routine Football Code Forms

Coral Gables, Florida – It was David Beckham himself who got gassed the first time he led a class in his new 45-minute workout routine. He pushed through an extensive termination that insisted Gunnar Peterson added to the programming and shyly apologized.

“I turned to the class and said, ‘I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. That was really hard,'” Beckham said. “And they were like ‘No, that was cool.’ So obviously I was the only one who struggled through that.”

Beckham created the DB45 with celebrity trainer Peterson, and this week the program appeared across nearly 1,800 studios at F45 Training in 67 countries. Peterson is head of athletics at F45, a franchise sports model backed by Mark Wahlberg.

Peterson worked with Beckham to build an exercise that incorporates elements of the system that the 47-year-old world icon uses to this day. It’s been nearly a decade since Beckham last played professionally but he has kept fit and in all his looks has remained at his peak fitness.

Beckham routinely document his fitness routine on social media and in creating the DB45, he offered regular athletes the chance to train like one of football’s biggest stars.

“It’s obviously tailored to what I’ve been used to doing in my career, some practice,” Beckham told The Associated Press during a presentation of the DB45 at Coral Gables F45 training, a day after attending the opening Formula 1 race in Miami.

“We don’t design anything for any particular sport or athlete because our society is not about athletes. Yes, there are some ex-athletes who get into F45, but this is not an exercise designed only for elite athletes.”

Okay, so you won’t be able to bend it like Beckham at the end of the class. But the Associated Press attests that the workout is no joke: This reporter took the DB45 twice in its launch week, at the Coral Gables location with Beckham, and then again at F45 Training South Park in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Separation in Florida was scary. Filled with influencers led by acclaimed F45 coaches Cory George and Morgan Mitchell, this fast-paced, football-inspired 11-station cardio class was amazing. Two DJs played in the back of the room while George and Mitchell toured the stations enthusiastically cheering the participants while using their outside voices.

He moves quickly and uses Beckham shirt numbers 32 and 23: the exercises take place in two sets at each stop, the first 32 seconds and the second 23 seconds. After all 11 stations are completed, the command is repeated a second time.

The workout was set up as a 4:4:2 soccer formation in the studio, and somewhere between the functional resistance “defenders” stations 2-5 and the agility-based “midfield” stations 6-9, a publicist happily called me up to speak with Beckham Peterson to the side.

I was breathless and sweaty, only completing one stop. Who will do this exercise regularly?

“People who want to know what athletes are really going through, to do that they need to do exercise that prepares them not just for soccer or soccer, but for all sports and all the things that life throws at you,” Peterson told AP. He maintains that by following an elite program like Beckham’s, anyone can improve their general well-being.

When Peterson thought the DB45 was complete, Beckham told him there was still something missing.

Beckham smiled, “Make sure you boot.”

When the “extra time” of seven exercises at Coral Gables approached, I missed half of the class talking to Beckham and Peterson and mostly completed them except for the reverse burpee. So I took the class again on a regularly scheduled Wednesday – the class is designed once a week as part of the four-week F45 program – in Charlotte.

There were no DJs on a normal Wednesday night and the class wasn’t full of influencers or Beckham. But those who attended the DB45 were apparently gym fans, including studio owner Jay Moss, who brought his wife Becca, taking the class for the second time that day.

The energy was still the same, beginning when Beckham greets participants in a video message and throughout the class. When the “extra time” begins, almost everyone is gasping for air. Then come seal jacks, squats, and wide mountain climbers, and if that’s the way David Beckham does it, it’s no wonder he looks like he could fit in with Inter Miami, his flagship soccer team.

“This is a lot of exercise that I enjoyed as well as some exercise that I didn’t,” Beckham told The Associated Press. “There’s a rush in there. I used to hate lunges. We have lunges here. So this isn’t training for the things I’ve loved throughout my career. It’s the things I’ve actually had to do.”
