The 49ers She was just a field goal away from playing in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years last season.
After leading the Rams with two points heading into the fourth quarter of an NFC Championship game, the Niners faltered against their division rivals. San Francisco gave Los Angeles 13 consecutive points in the final frame, eventually dropping 20-17. The Rams went on to win the Super Bowl two weeks later.
However, the 49 players who entered the post-season were nothing short of amazing. San Francisco has racked up its victories in seven of its last nine games after starting 3-5 to beat a crowded NFC playoff point.
In two of the past three years quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has done enough to get his 49ers on the brink of winning the Super Bowl but each time the club comes up short. As a result, San Francisco was expected to tackle this veteran signal caller out of the season.
It didn’t happen until mid-May that he’s now paired with Deebo Samuel’s broadband receiver asking for a deal. The two cases involving two major contributors last year have left the Niners in a tough spot with summer fast approaching.
With Trey Lance waiting in the wings and coach Kyle Shanahan continuing to lead, the 49ers should have a chance to compete in the NFC West no matter what happens to Garoppolo and Samuel. Here’s who San Francisco will need to get past to get back into after the season.
