It was a rule change considered, voted on and instituted by the PGA Tour, and it made a lot of headlines over the winter. In December, the USGA and R&A made available the domestic form of Rule G-11 that allowed governing bodies to limit detail in green reading materials. The Tour then issued a memorandum to the players saying that it would implement such a restriction beginning on January 1, 2022. The Players Advisory Board supported the change.
The purpose of the rule, according to the memo, is “to return to a position where only players and casters use their skill, judgment and feeling along with any information gained through experience, preparation, and practice to read the playing line on the green fetch.”
Now, al-Qaeda appears to have the first “victim”. On Saturday, the PGA Tour Champions media staff noted in a tournament press release that Alex Cejka was disqualified from Alabama’s zonal lore after the third round for using “a yardbook that was not approved for the competition by the rules of the PGA Tour Champions Committee.”
Cejka, a one-time PGA Tour winner and two Champions Tour wins, shot 66 in the third round to tie after 54 holes—a result that would have put him in a tie for 43rd place in the tournament in any major in the top circuit. Instead, Cejka, 51, joined John Daly in the disqualification fund. (Dalí struggled with DQ on Friday when he didn’t sign his scorecard.) There was no immediate comment from Cejka regarding his distinct intelligence.
After the base is docked, the tour provides books that look like old books, with one difference: they only provide general information about the slopes and other features on the greenery. Old books had laser readouts that indicated minute intervals. Players are allowed to use handwritten notes that are taken by them or take down their cans from personal note.
Oddly enough, this isn’t Sejka’s first fling with the rules regarding green reading books. In 2019, he was disqualified after the 14th hole in the first round of the Honda Classic when it was discovered he was using a book that didn’t fit the “scale” of the new green reading books. Prior to that season, the tour sized greens photos at 3/8 inch to five yards.
We think jCeka needs some more reading… of the rules.
