Buffalo Bills optimistic about Boogie Basham entering his second season

Last year, the Buffalo Bills used their first two 2020 NFL Draft picks on the defensive end by picking Greg Rousseau in the first round and then Boogie Basham in the next. At the time, the thought was that Russo was a player with great physical tools but needed some time to develop.

Meanwhile, Basham was someone who could immediately contribute as a rookie given that he is the most experienced player in Wake Forest with 42 career appearances.

However, that wasn’t what the season played last year, with Russo getting a starting job from the start, starting every game last year, while Basham struggled to play on a regular basis. He will appear in only eight games in the regular season and will be inactive for six of the first eight weeks of the season.

Buffalo Bills like what they saw from Boogie Basham this off season

Fast forward to this season, and the Bills will take important strides into the center with a large free-agent pool to sign with Von Miller but also bring back former first-round pick Shaq Lawson. This would raise reasonable questions about where Besham fits in and whether the team has some concerns about the player.

That doesn’t seem to be the case, and FanSided’s Matt Lombardo has in fact tweeted that the team is optimistic about the previous second-round pick. He has remained at Buffalo coaching all the offseason and should see an “expanded role this season”.

As Lombardo points out, Basham did well during the playoffs with six full tackles and a sack, which came against the New England Patriots. Play at least 25% of the defensive shots in each match.

The final defensive position is sure to look different this year as Jerry Hughes, who has played for nearly a decade with the Buffalo Bills, was reported to have recently signed with the Houston Texans. He will join Mario Addison, who has played the past two seasons at Buffalo, and has also signed with Texas.

While Von Miller will take on a large role in the rotation, there is still a chance for Boogie Basham to create an even bigger role in this defense next season. Based on Matt Lombardo’s report, it looks like he’s off to a great start making this a reality.
