Football team RCD Espanyol becomes the first Spanish club to accept crypto payments

The professional football team in Catalonia, Spain – RCD Espanyol – will enable fans to buy game tickets, merchandise products, food and drinks in several cryptocurrencies. The offer will be available at the start of the next season in La Liga (August 2022).

The first in the Spanish League to embrace cryptocurrency

Digital assets and the football industry have formed a relatively strong bond over the past several months. Numerous clubs from around the world have announced partnerships with crypto companies, introduced exchanges as sponsors, or accepted an asset class as a payment method.

However, the Spanish football first division – La Liga – has not been strongly involved in this sector. According to a recent press release, that trend is about to change this summer when RCD Espanyol will allow its supporters to purchase tickets, food and drinks during matches, and merchandise products in bitcoin, ether and other digital assets.

To do this, the club has partnered with Crypto Snack – a financial app based in Barcelona and Estonia. It has an original iGaming token, called SNACK, that is listed on several major exchanges. The original will be added to the show, allowing fans to use it as a means of compromise.

Mao Ye Wu – CEO of RCD Espanyol – believes that the collaboration will provide “enormous advantages both on and off the field”, providing football fans with additional opportunities when attending the match.

“With this step, we become pioneers in a field that is not the future, but the already present,” he emphasized.

On his part, CEO of Crypto Snack – Stuart Morrison – said that his company is honored to partner with one of the most famous football clubs in Spain. He believes this endeavor will give Espanyol fans “a fun and effective way to support their team through the use of SNACK and other cryptocurrencies.”

Tigres said ‘yes’ to Bitcoin

Another football giant that has allowed fans to buy match passes with cryptocurrency is Mexico’s Tigres. To make this possible, the team has partnered with Latin American digital asset exchange Bitso.

The platform’s co-founder and CEO, Daniel Vogel, argued that partnering with Tigres would increase the daily use of cryptocurrencies at sporting events, “and thus expand their use as a means of payment for any type of event.”

The president of the football club – Mauricio Colebro Galvan – hinted that this may not be the last crypto endeavor the team has launched:

“Tigres has continued to look to the future, and new initiatives are sure to come with Bitso to continue providing even greater services.”
