Jonathan Tooys becomes sixth UND player to reach 1,000 NHL games – Grand Forks Herald

SUNRISE, FL – Jonathan Toews hit a milestone Thursday night.

The former UND star played his 1,000th career in the NHL regular season for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Toews became the sixth former UND player to make 1,000 NHL regular season games. The others are James Patrick (1280), Craig Ludwig (1256), Zach Barris (1125), Travis Zajak (1037) and Dave Christian (1009).

“It’s special,” said Toys, who is in his 15th season in the National Hockey League. “I’m so grateful for getting to this point. For the most part, I’d kind of like to share that appreciation with my teammates.”

Chicago lost the game 4-0 to the Florida Panthers.

“It was a special match, win or lose,” Toyos said. “I’ve become very close to those guys in this room. I think when you have challenges and you have a season with a lot of ups and downs – maybe you’re not in the playoffs – it’s hard to keep going together. I think that has done nothing but that. I certainly appreciate very much. My ability to reach this mark with this group right now.”

Although a milestone game came on the way for the Blackhawks, Florida fans welcomed Toews reaching 1,000 matches.

“I’m not expecting anything and I haven’t been looking for it at all,” said Toews. “It’s just a special personal achievement as you want to tell all of your teammates and everyone who was a part of it how grateful you are for their support.”

Blackhawks coach Derek King said he enjoyed the appreciation of the Tows team.

“It was great to get him to win or if he gets a goal or something, but that’s a huge achievement for anyone to get to 1,000 games,” King said. “Okay for him. We’re so happy for him.”

Toews came to UND in 2005 with a star-studded recruiting class that also included Hobey Baker Award winner Ryan Duncan, NHLers TJ Oshie, Taylor Chorney, Brian Lee, Joe Finley and Matt Watkins.

The Toews played two seasons at UND, helping the program with back-to-back trips to the NCAA Frozen Four. He signed with the Blackhawks in 2007, shortly after his 19th birthday.

The Winnipeg native has spent his entire career with the Black Hawks, leading the franchise to three Stanley Cups. He also won two Olympic gold medals.

Toews has played 57 games this season, scoring 10 goals and 29 points. He’s a free agent at the end of next season.

UND and Wisconsin are associated with more than 1,000 NHLers games.
