Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson is on the list

It looks like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are ready to hit the tracks once again.

Woods and Mickelson are officially listed on the field Monday for next week’s PGA Championship. Although there is still plenty of time to turn things around before this year’s second Grand Slam kicks off in Tulsa, Oklahoma, it will mark Woods’ first since the Masters last month and Mickelson’s debut since his controversial comments about Saudi Arabia. .

Tiger Woods Appointed to the Post-Masters PGA Championship

Woods competed in The Masters last month, and it was the first time he had returned to playing competitively since the horrific single-car crash that nearly cost him his leg over a year ago.

Woods made the cut after opening with 71 at Augusta National and played all four days, but was struggling by the end of the week. He has said all the time that his biggest problem is simply going too far on consecutive days, and that didn’t help the challenging track at the Augusta National.

Although Woods does not plan to play full-time on the PGA Tour again, he has committed to playing the British Open in July and has said he may compete in other major tournaments along the way. Played a practice run at Southern Hills Country Club last month as well.

The last time the PGA Championship was at Southern Hills, Woods defeated Woody Austin to win his thirteenth title.

While your inclusion in the field isn’t a solid commitment to the competition, it’s a good sign that Woods will battle it out next Thursday in Oklahoma.

Phil Mickelson returns after the Saudi scandal

Mickelson also appears ready to return to golf after a hiatus of more than three months, but his break was very different from that of Woods.

Mickelson has not played since the Farmers Insurance Open in late January, and has quit golf entirely after making controversial comments about Saudi Arabia and the Saudi-backed LIV golf tournament.

Mickelson said in an interview for an upcoming book that he is willing to work with the Saudis despite their being “scary mothers” and an appalling human rights record. He said he was willing to overlook these things, including the murder of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi, because “this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour works.

Mickelson has since apologized for those comments, and has remained quiet ever since.

The LIV Golf Series will begin next month, which is something Mickelson has offered to play in. Greg Norman, who runs that series, actually blamed Mickelson’s comments for why so many top golfers fall back.

It hurts a lot of aspects. It hurts the PGA Tour. It hurts us. It hurts golf. Norman said last week. “Yes, across all fronts. It wasn’t just about us. But it definitely created negative momentum against us.”

Mickelson is the reigning PGA Championship title holder after winning last year at Torrey Pines. This win was the forty-fifth of his career and sixth in his major.

Like Woods, Mickelson could still drop out of the PGA Championship. If he actually played, he would surely have been asked about his recent scandals.
