Win 7 game, face hurricanes

The New York Rangers go to Game Seven against the Penguins knowing that if they can win, they will face the Carolina Hurricanes who beat the Boston Bruins on Saturday to take their series.

The Hurricanes won 3-2 in a game they never fell behind, in front of a raucous rally crowd. Their star player was Max Dome, who scored his first two goals in the qualifiers. The two goals match his total of 19 games for Carolina after he came on a business deal with Columbus.

The end result was closer to match as Bruins’ David Pasternak managed to score Boston’s second goal by pulling the goalkeeper with only 22 seconds left. There was a crazy stampede as the match ended, but the Bruins did.

With the win, the Hurricanes have now won six games in a row going back to 2006. This ties into the NHL record held by three other teams including the Rangers who did so from 2012-2015.

All these ex-guards

The Hurricanes won the match with five former Rangers in the lineup. Netminder Antti Raanta was in goal but looks set to be replaced in the next round by Frederik Andersen. Jesper Fast is a defensive champion for the Canes family, as he was in New York.

What’s somewhat baffling for Rangers fans is the fact that half of the Hurricane’s defense is made up of Rangers Tony D’Angelo, Brady Skagi and Brendan Smith. DeAngelo has revived his career this season in Carolina and Skeeje in the lead with Brett Pesci.

An odd twist is that Brendan Smith is a regular on the third pair of defense, along with Ian Cole. Remember, Smith hasn’t broken through to the Rangers’ top six in the last two seasons, but he’s been a regular player on the Metropolitan Division’s top squad.

If you watched the game you watched, Smith made a classic foul, shooting the puck into the stands as the sticks cling to a 3-1 lead in the third inning. Brendan Smith was vintage.

If the Rangers make it to the second round, the Hurricanes will be a formidable opponent. Carolina should be pretty confident knowing she has beaten the Blues in three of four games while Rangers’ only win was the 2-0 robbery by Alexander Georgiev.

However, as we all know, it’s a whole new season with playoffs, and we can throw away the results of the regular season. Just ask the penguins.
