Over the weekend, big calls were made from every way in the sport, as both high school recruits, talented small college recruits and transfer gate prospects put an end to their singles hiring.
The timing surrounding the wave of decisions shouldn’t come as a huge surprise either, given that it was the first official visit in the weekend of June. It’s the time of year when college coaches routinely host a great deal of talent on campus, through visits and college camps—so naturally many recruits are given the green light to make a commitment, and a lot of compulsion.
Working from the most experienced prospect to prep talent with another year of high school football, the major recipients were selected out of the NCAA transfer gate in Charlie Jones and Koy Moore. The duo made the moves to play in the same conference while playing the same position. Each was sprayed on previous stations as well.
Jones, who only entered the gate two weeks ago, made a national mark as a return last fall in Iowa, where he was an all-Big Ten pick. Also a fixed 323-yard receiver at 21 receivers in 2021, it will now improve the black and gold tone and match the Purdue, according to a report.
Moore previously had one of the longest-projected spots before he made his decision on the weekend. The former LSU star, who emerged as a real freshman while rebuilding the Tigers in 2020, hit the gate in October shortly after the graffiti surfaced for Ed Orgeron employees in Baton Rouge. There wasn’t much fanfare about Moore’s name for his new destination until he made an appointment to visit Auburn. The weekend’s trip concluded with the Louisiana native’s decision to be announced at the Securities and Exchange Commission, reuniting him with former LSU teammate and CAF quarterback TJ Finley in the process.
Other gate decisions over the weekend in South Carolina included Ricko Powers, wide receiver for South Carolina State, a pledge to Dion Sanders and Jackson State, Illinois quarterback Matt Robinson committed to return to his native California and play in Fresno State, and Dane Shore, a man Offensive line in Alabama, about his plans to cooperate. With Jim Mora at UConn. A few players also entered the gate over the weekend, as the seemingly endless cycle of college players changing colors continued.

One of the most tracked new students dropped out of the program on Saturday in Romain Rachad. Diablo Valley College’s top defensive linebacker had been considering Miami, Virginia Tech and Ole Mays before picking the Rebels. He made an official visit to Oxford during the week, along with his brother and first-class Jaden Rashada in the 2023 team, and concluded his enlistment shortly after. Missouri and Tennessee added college prep commitments during the week.
Still, the primary avenue for talent in college football starts from middle school. This weekend was a stark reminder with the sound coming off the board. About 16 Power 5 programs have added at least one recruit, publicly, since the first official visit began at the weekend of the month. Pete, Arizona, Illinois and Virginia added many more recruits, with the Panthers putting six new pledges on the board after entering the weekend with only a pair.
The soon-to-be P5 program grabbed the headlines for recruiting over the weekend, at least from a decision-based perspective. Cincinnati, which will of course be heading to the Big 12 in 2023, added eight staggering oral commitments over the weekend. The Bearcats have built one of the biggest classes before this point, so doubling the total in a matter of days gives Luke Fickell his third biggest pledge so far in the ’23 course with 16 (Texas Tech has 20, Notre Dame has 17).
Many of the Bearcats’ commitments naturally had options to play within the Power 5 conventions, but one of the commitments was a previous commitment within those ranks at Daeh McCullough. Indiana’s previous commitment and local prospects returned to the job market on May 19, and the flight to Cincinnati was set up shortly thereafter. The closing in at the defensive back, which has drawn renewed interest from Penn State, Miami and others, is the latest example of the program’s ability to compete for top talent. This is the kind of recruiting win, similar to the SI99 pass rusher Mario Eugenio in ’22, which keeps UC king among the field’s five-star group.
While it’s the verbal commitments that move the needle the most, it’s worth noting that the initial weekend visit of the month played well across Blue Bloods in sports too. Arch Manning headlined his Georgia weekend, making his first official visit while UGA revealed an all-white outfit through photoshoots by the recruits. Clemson hosted perhaps the largest group of official visitors ever, with about 30 recruits spending a weekend in the city on a dime for the ACC. Alabama, Texas A&M, Auburn, Nebraska and Wisconsin are likely to host talent that will be added to the commit list at a later date.
We expect more movement in June and July before the first Sports Illustrated Team recruiting ranking debut in August.
