Derek Lewis hired from Del Valle as new football coach at LASA Austin

LASA has hired a college football coach with extensive experience in the NFL, college and high school football fields.

Derek Lewis, 46, officially takes office July 1, but is already preparing for his first season at LASA, the magnet school of liberal arts and sciences in the Austin area. Take charge of Brian Cruz, a former football coach and athletic coordinator who recently left to take up a position at El Paso Mountain View.

Lewis, who has spent the past two years as an offensive coordinator at Del Valle, said he is keen to take on a football team with minimal experience. LASA students competed at LBJ through the start of the 2020-2021 academic year.

“That’s the beauty of it all,” Lewis said. “I can put my mark throughout the program and develop the athletes who are already here. With student athletes, the student comes first. We have an academically successful school and the goal is to continue that. But we want to grow the sport within it because there are some really good athletes in the building. It’s more about culture and acceptance. Sports as an opportunity to go to college.”
