Today’s latest New York Rangers Roundup begins with two of the organization’s top potential players battling it out in the OHL playoffs.
It was a good night for Brennan Usman (1G – 2A) and Will Coyle (1G – 1A) because they both had multipoint games. The Flint Firebirds separate to winning the Wayne Gretzky Cup as Western Conference champions.
Osman’s reduced goal put Flint on the board and closed the gap to 2-1. Then he set the next two goals to get the Firebirds advance. Cuylle scored a PP goal to lead his Windsor Spitfires to a single net, but Flint held onto the win and led 3-2 in the series.
Osman and Quill fight in OHL
Rangers drafted Quill in the 2020 draft, in the second round. The selection was taken from the L.A. Kings versus Lias Andersson. The 6-4, 210-pound, 20-year-old winger had an impressive season with 43 goals and 80 points in 50 games. In the playoffs, he added 10 goals and made 10 in 16 matches.
19-year-old Usman was selected by Rangers in the first round of the 2021 draft. The 6-0, 180-pound striker scored 50 goals and 97 points in the OHL this past season. In post-season play, he added 9 goals and 23 points in 17 games.
Cup and Vatrano on Goudreau
When Barkley Goudreau suited up for the New York Rangers in Game Six on Saturday night, he surprised not only fans and the media, but also his teammates.
“[Copp] And I was driving to the rink together and I was driven there by us,” Vatrano recalls. “I was like, ‘Judy’s here, I think maybe he’s playing,’ and Cope replied, ‘What are you doing here?'” as he played. It doesn’t surprise me at all. A man who has won cups and knows what it takes to win. To see him come back from an injury like this so quickly. What he brings to our team is not something you can replace and including him in our squad certainly gave us an extra leap.”
Goudreau, 29, played 13:16 from an ankle injury. He finished the game 6 and won with 50% of his draws (7-7) and +1 rating. Goodrow also added a block, hit, and shot while playing a big role in PK.
“Obviously, what he’s done over the past two years with the Stanley Cup – he’s a leader and a personality on our team,” said Gerard Gallant. “What he does with his overall game – he kills penalties and the whole business. He is huge for our club.”
