Golf can be a difficult sport for young children to get into. Typical tournament rounds are usually quiet, long, and boring. Enter Nickelodeon. The Kids’ Cable Network has recruited four of the best golf pros to participate in an hour-long television special to get kids interested in the game.
It promises to be anything but quiet, long, and boring.
Nickelodeon’s “Slime Cup” airs Saturday (June 25) at 8 p.m. ET. It features Colin Morikawa, John Ram, Justin Thomas, and Lexi Thompson as captains of four teams competing against each other at “Nick-ified” golf. In addition to a professional golfer, each team consists of a celebrity/athlete and a Nickelodeon representative.
The Morikawa Green Team features actor and former football player Terry Crews, as well as Nickelodeon star Jaden Triplett. Thomas teamed up with WWE star Nikki Bella and Nickelodeon actor Isaiah Crews on the Pink Team. The Red Ram team includes Los Angeles Chargers midfielder Justin Herbert and Kate Godfrey from Nickelodeon. Thompson, an 11-time LPGA Tour winner, teams up with New York Giants running Saquon Barkley and Nickelodeon star Tyler Wladis for the Orange Team.
The “course” that the teams will play will be far from the usual layout. Slime Cup producers promise unique tee boxes, far and green fairways, and physical challenges that will make the competition interesting. Hint: expect a lot of slime.
The event culminates with the final hole – “The Unfairway” – which will be played inside the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. There are players who will battle it out to win a Nickelodeon Slime Trophy, an orange Nick jacket and the “honor” of getting slime on TV.
The Slime Cup will feature its own unique broadcast team led by CBS Sports’ Noah Eagle and a pair of Nick stars – Gabrielle Nevaeh and Young Dylan. iCarly’s Jerry Trainor and Betch’s Hunter March will be on the sidelines for a play-by-play commentary.
The hour-long show is being produced by some of the same team that worked on the popular golf franchise, The Match. Just as The Match series invites new fans to enjoy the game through popular sports and television characters, the new Nickelodeon special hopes to entice kids to pay more attention to golf in the future while cheering them up on the characters of their favorite TV show.
