Following the completion of the qualifying stages in the first week of June, the draw for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is scheduled to take place at FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland on Friday (24 June). Up to 16 countries will participate in the event, including host India.

We share with you all the relevant details of the tournament as India hosts the FIFA U-17 World Cup for the second time – after the 2018 FIFA Men’s U-17 World Cup.

Troubled history: Postponement and cancellation due to the pandemic

India was announced as the host of the seventh edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in 2019 and was scheduled to host the event in 2020 (November 2-21) before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the postponement of the biennial event. The new dates for the released tournament were 17 February – 7 March in 2021 with five venues: Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, Indira Gandhi Sports Stadium in Guwahati, Eka Arena in Ahmedabad and D.Y. Patel Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

However, with the ever-increasing cases during the first wave of COVID-19, organizers had to push the tournament to October 11-30.

change of place

Back in April, FIFA announced the stadiums by adding Goa Fatorda Stadium to the list while only Navi Mumbai and Bhubaneswar were retained. Prafull Patel, then FIFA president, confirmed in a statement that the decision was made keeping in mind the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country as FIFA restricted venues for fear of cases spreading within the vital bubble.

It is understood that Goa has been included in the stadium after it has successfully hosted two seasons of ISL and will host the largest number of matches during the World Cup.

In the meantime, the Indian team, which was placed in Group A as the host, will play all three of its matches in Bhubaneswar. The final will be held at DY Patel Stadium in Navi Mumbai on October 30.

world cup shape

In the 16-team tournament, the teams will be divided into four groups of four countries each. The best two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals based on the points obtained (three points for a win, one for a draw, and zero for a loss). In the event of a tie between the group teams, the winner will be determined by goal difference followed by goals scored (if required). In the event of a tie above the three criteria, the fair play points will determine the winner.

In the knockout stages, teams will compete in the Singles Elimination Mode tournament with a playoff for third place also played between the losing teams in the semi-finals.

The teams participating in the lottery

Besides the host country India, 15 countries from different continents qualified. Defending champions Spain, France and Germany from UEFA (Europe) and Brazil, Chile and Colombia from South America (South America) qualified. From CONCACAF (North America), Canada, Mexico and the USA formed the trio of CAF (Africa), Morocco, Nigeria and Tanzania. New Zealand is the only representative of the OFC (Oceania).

lottery pots

India enters Pot 1 along with Japan, Spain and Germany. Mexico, Canada, Brazil and New Zealand are ranked second, while African champions Nigeria are third, along with France, the United States and China. Tanzania, which is participating in the first World Cup finals, is in the fourth tier along with the teams of South America, Chile, Colombia and another Maghreb.

lottery rules

Each group will be formed from one team selected from each of the four pots. This effectively means that India will not face any of its teammates in the first bowl in Spain, defending champions, Asian champions Japan and Germany in the group.
