EDWARDSVILLE, Illinois – The 2022 men’s SIUE schedule, featuring eight regular season games and the return of the Bronze Boot match to Edwardsville, was announced Thursday.
“I look forward to the many different challenges the opponents will present,” SIUE coach Cal Wasserman He said. “After a difficult year in 2021, this group is eager to come back this fall. Overall, I think the schedule will provide a great balance between opponents, playing styles and some great home games here at the Korte Stadium.”
The Cougars will open their fixture schedule with a pre-season game with Illinois Springfield (August 20). The game is part of the annual SIUE Experience, Student Orientation Weekend.
The regular season begins on the West Coast with matches at Loyola Marymount (August 25) and CSUN (August 28).
SIUE will also play a non-conference game in Western Illinois (September 9).
“We are excited about the no-conference list, including an early trip to the West Coast which will not only be a great competition, but will be an opportunity for us to travel and bond together as a group in early fall,” Wasserman said. “After that trip, we will face some strong regional opponents who will attend a variety of different formats which will be a great preparation for the conference schedule.”
The Bronze Boot’s return to Edwardsville highlights the Korte Stadium’s no-conference schedule (September 13). The Cougars will host the Billikens for the first time since 2019. Since the series’ return in 2018, all three games have doubled overtime.
“It would be exciting to see the Bronze Boot match coming home here in Edwardsville,” Wasserman said. “I’m expecting another tough group in St. Louis. It’s a historic competition especially for college football, both programs, and the St. Louis and Metro East communities. It should be a fun group here and I know our group will be ready for that.”
SIUE will also host Lindenwood (September 2), Southern Indiana (September 5) and Memphis (September 27) in non-conference play.
The Missouri Valley Conference season, SIUE’s second season since its return to the league, begins on the road in Evansville (September 17). The Cougars will also travel to games in Drake (October 1), Missouri (October 19) and Bradley (October 29).
SIUE will host new MVC members Belmont (September 24) and UIC (October 9) as well as Evansville (October 15) and Missouri State (November 2).
“MVC is a tough league and with the new schedule setup we will have eight MVC games and some new competitors including Belmont and UIC,” Wasserman added. “I have experience training against both programs which I know will be very good additions to the league along with a really strong set of MVC opponents that we will face.”
