The NASCAR Cup Series began its 74th season on February 20 with the Daytona 500. Many of the venues and race names will be familiar to NASCAR fans. However, one thing they will notice about this year’s schedule is that the races will start a little later than fans have been accustomed to in recent years. This is part of NASCAR’s broader goal of increasing audiences, explained NASCAR’s Senior Vice President of Media and Production Brian Herbst.
“Based on data and fan feedback from the past several years, changing noon start times back allows more fans — both at home and on the track — to participate in NASCAR races on Sundays,” Herbst said in a press release. “In addition, having most Cup Series races on broadcast for over a decade aligns with our strategy to distribute our content to as many fans as possible during key moments in the season.”
