‘I Don’t See Me Coming Back’: Phil Mickelson once filmed his dissatisfaction with playing in Detroit after supposed $500,000 gambling debts

Phil Mickelson is one of the best golfers of all time, with over 50 title wins worldwide, including 6 major championships. While the golf world respects him for being a great golfer, fans love him for being the friendliest golfer on the tour. However, he proved that even one of the friendliest golfers can be aggressive during the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

“I don’t see myself coming back,” Mickelson had said then. “Not that I don’t like the people here and they weren’t cool, but not with the kind of…things that happen.”

What made Phil Mickelson make such an important decision?

Mickelson He was playing at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club when a local media outlet published an article linking him to an alleged mob bookmaker in a 2007 trial. According to the newspaper, the bookmaker allegedly scammed Mickelson out of $500,000.

Furthermore, Rob Snells, the reporter who published the report, claimed that he obtained the federal report on the case, and that the golfer’s incident was part of it. Notably, the aforementioned incident occurred more than 20 years ago, and the reporter released news about it in 2021 as Mickelson was playing at an event there. This made the golfer lose his cool.

The news broke while Mickelson was playing at the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Although he announced that he would never play in Detroit again, he did not withdraw from the Classic.

Mickelson had an overall score of 3 – under 285 from the event and finished in T74. Notably, Cam Davis won the title in a playoff match with Troy Merritt and Joaquin Neiman. They scored minus 18 after four rounds.
