9 fall 2022 hair color trends that every fashion girl wears

With triple-digit temperatures invading multiple cities, it’s hard to believe fall is on the doorstep, but soon you’ll trade open-toed sandals for ankle boots. Lucky for you, TZR has you covered with the best seasonal cosmetics from dreamy makeup looks to fall 2022 hair color trends.

This year, getting your hair shade wet is easier than you think, thanks to the plethora of inspiration seen on catwalks, social media, and a list of celebrities. Ashley Streicher, hairstylist and owner of Striiike Salon in Los Angeles, thinks it’s the perfect time to add depth to your hair color. “People are willing to tone down their summer events to enrich things,” the pros said. Popular shades this fall fall into two categories: modern updates to your natural tone and bold and dramatic splashes of color. Meaning, everything from mushroom blonde to coppery red is ready to be grabbed.

Are you ready to kick it out of the water this season with your hair color? Before that, four celebrity hairstylists and colorists study the hottest trends out there right now. Experts even make some hero products for maintaining salon tones at home. Tip: You’ll want to bring this list to your next color appointment.

Maple leaf highlights

Quia Querisma, a Dallas-based natural hair specialist, recommends taking your cues from nature with this mix of gold, orange, brown, and red hair shades. “These color trends suit all hair types, from straight to curly hair and can be worn by most skin tones,” the expert tells TZR. “To maintain your color-treated hair, choose salon-quality shampoo, conditioner, and styling tool.” Her Suggestion: The entire Pureology brand has been designed with color care in mind, Color Fanatic Multi-Tasking Deep Conditioning Mask and Color Fanatic Multi-Leave Mist to hydrate and repair hair while protecting color.

red frenzy

Jamie Mazzei, creative director of NuBest Salon & Spa in Manhasset, New York, sees shades of red as the hot color trend for fall. “If you have fair skin, try strawberry blonde or light copper,” the professional tells TZR. “For medium olive skin tones, choose copper or coral. For darker skin tones, choose magenta and burgundy.”

caramel swirls

Mazzei recommends caramel, a creamy brown with golden undertones, for its ability to compliment any skin tone, and it’s highly customizable. As for maintenance tips, Lorena M. Valdes, color stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago, encourages washing down and masking hair at least twice per month to lock in moisture and help maintain lighter tones.

dark mocha

Dark mocha, a dark brown you can go for before turning black, is one of the most popular colors you’ll see this fall according to Shavonne Perkins, chief educator at Madison Reed. Perkins recommends keeping up with the shine or toning either by going to a salon or with Madison Reed Color Reviving Gloss Espresso at home to keep the color looking fresh.

shaded roots

Goodbye ombre, hello shaded roots. “Instead of root-to-end highlights, this trend is to create a deeper base with lighter ends from center to ends for a more shaded root, giving the illusion of big, full hair,” Perkins tells TZR. It’s also a great trend for those who don’t have time for regular touch ups because imperfection is the name of the game. To maintain your roots in between salon visits, use Madison Reed Root Perfection to blend seamlessly with your color.

silent copper

According to celebrity colorist Matt Reese, muted copper, which features a brick-colored background with copper-gold highlights, will be everywhere this fall. The color is perfect for those with more olive skin tones, as the warm brown base will complement the undertones in the skin. He adds, “Adjust this hair color level to your eye color — lean further into the brown end of this color direction and a subtle copper shade woven within your brown base color if you have darker eyes.”

Modern mushroom blond

Streicher sees the rising demands of mushroom blonde for fall where there are cooler, earthy tones enhanced by light brown highlights. “The best way to keep colors vibrant and rich is to make sure you use safe products with good natural colours,” says the expert while discussing maintenance. Her favorite product is Vegamour ENSO 02 Shampoo and Conditioner for its ability to deliver moisture and protect color.

deep plum

As we move more toward fall, Perkins predicts more vibrant mauve and reds that mix with darker red brunettes to create the look of cherry cola—mahogany tones that fall between red and violet. “One way to try this trend is to add red color over brown hair with a temporary mask like Madison’s Red Color Therapy Mask Robin,” the expert tells TZR. “You will see the depth of the brunette remains the same but the red sheen shines in the light.”

champagne blonde

Champagne blonde has been trending for a few seasons now, but this fall she’s moving away from her lighter shades and instead rocking a medium to dark blonde base with gold undertones. Eyes, skin, and compliments with lots of undertones,” Perkins says.
