ESPN announced that British Singer, musician, songwriter and actor Yungblud will provide the background music for the 2022-23 college football season. The artist’s new single – ‘The Emperor’ – will serve as the anthem for ESPN’s college football coverage, which kicks off August 27, ahead of Yungblud’s Self-titled album release on September 2 (Motion Records/Geffen).
This continues the collaboration between ESPN and IGA, which includes tracks that have appeared in ESPN’s coverage of the NBA season, previous college football seasons, and more. Previous artists who have done the music for the anthem include Imagine Dragons (Natural), Juice WRLD (Come & Go), and Thirty Seconds To Mars (Walk On Water).
Music from the biggest label artists will be featured on ESPN’s college football, merchandising and gaming programming once again this season.
“In previous years, we’ve chosen music that matches the tone of college football. This year, with The Emperor, it sounds like a song dedicated to college football from Yungblud.” Curtis Friends, senior director of sports marketing at ESPN, said: “The chants, the noise, and the tone match perfectly. Perfect with what we expect to feel about and inside college football this season.” “The rhythm and energy of the song seemed to unleash all the bottled energy and intensity of the fans, players and teams that have been waiting for next season. It’s the perfect objective fit for the tides of the season that will end with one team crowning the next college emperor.”
“It’s a great honor to have my song ‘Emperor’ chosen to be the anthem for ESPN’s college football season. I wrote this song when I was 17. It was just an outburst of unfiltered energy that I knew she would enjoy her moment one day,” Youngblood said. “I’ve played it live for years, but haven’t found the time to release it yet. College football is such a huge part of American culture, and all I want to do is bring energy to people, so I can’t wait for the song to bring that energy to fans and players in games all season.”
Featured in a football promotional ad produced by ESPN, Yungblud highlights the collaboration by developing social content to amplify the excitement as fans enter a new college football season on the network. ESPN is also revamping its Spotify playlist to celebrate the college football season with its Yungblud acquisition. The playlist, curated by Yungblud, will feature a mix of today’s biggest hits and sports anthems.
This season, college football fans will hear music from Yungblud, as well as other top artists from Interscope Records, Capitol Music and Disney Music Group, including Halsey, Ciara, Quavo & Takeoff, Tyler Hubbard, DNCE and Dreamers.
