The debate over who is the best player in the NBA today includes any number of excellent players. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has always held that title, but now there are many others who can claim that title, including Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Nikola Jokic and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
For many, it is the Bucks superstar who now holds that crown after winning back-to-back MVP awards for the regular season in 2019 and 2020 before putting in an all-time great performance in leading the Bucks to the 2021 NBA Championship. What makes him great is his intense work ethic and his motivation to better integrate with his talents. Unreal physicality.
Antetokounmpo is one of the few who can come close to matching James’ physical traits, but for the Greek star, the longevity and consistency LeBron has shown throughout his career is something he hopes to match, via Marca Basket:
“It is interesting to me how LeBron is still one of the best shapes in his life and being the best player in the world and is still at 18,” said Antetokounmue. “Like, this is really exciting. I want to know how he does it
“He’s been consistent for 18 years. He’s always there. He always shows up. That’s unbelievable.
“Obviously he got the credit, but I think we should give him more credit. Doing this for 18 years guys, that’s tough.
“And I hope to be there. I hope I can do that for 18 or 20 years. That’s the goal.”
Of course, one of the reasons why LeBron has lasted so long is the amount of money he spends on his body and Giannis joked if he could match that level of commitment:
“You have to spend $1.5 million on your body? I don’t know if I can do that. I’m too cheap for it. No kidding. It’s crazy to me man. It’s been so consistent. Fun to watch. Definitely fun to watch.”
Antetokounmpo is definitely a player who will do everything in his power to reach the level that James has reached. There are a lot of guys that have reached this higher level, but no one is left there as long as LeBron remains.
So far throughout his career, the Bucks star has shown a desire to be cool and has been relatively healthy thus far, so if any of the New Age stars can match what James has done, Giannis might be the best.
Lakers coach Darvin Hamm discusses the similarities between Giannis Antetokounmue and Anthony Davis
LeBron and Giannis now have another link as new Lakers coach Darvin Hamm has spent the past few years as a head assistant with the Bucks. But the Lakers player who tends to get the most comparisons to Giannis is Anthony Davis.
Hamm discussed the similarities, noting how ridiculous each player’s talent was in relation to their size and the ground they could form defensively.
