Superstars make six picks in the 2022 NHL Draft

Montreal – Dallas Stars general manager Jim Neal and amateur scouting manager Joe McDonnell wrapped up the 2022 NHL draft with a selection of five players on Friday. Below is a review of all six selections from the two-day draft at the Bell Center in Montreal.

Lian Bichsel – Defenseman (1st round, 18th overall)

The 6-foot-5, 216-pound defenseman spent most of his 2021-22 stint with SHL’s Lexandur, scoring three points (one goal, two assists) in 29 games. He also appeared in 11 games with the emerging Liksand team, and earned seven points (three goals, four assists).

“It feels great,” Bechsell said. “I’m a little surprised to go to Dallas, but I’m proud to be a Dallas player.”

Christian Kerro – Defenseman (Second round, 50th overall)

Kerou ranked fourth among OHL defenders with 60 points (18 goals, 42 assists) with Otters in the 2021-22 season. He also ranked third among the men of the league in winning the match (four).

“It’s pure excitement right now,” Kero said. “I’ve waited for this moment for so long. I’m just excited to hear my name call out. It’s been a roller coaster of events. I’m embracing the moment.”

The 5-foot-10, 182-pound Toronto, Ontario native was voted the Best Underrated Player of the Western Conference in the 2021-22 OHL Coaches Poll. His 60 points were the most by an Otters defender since Darren Radish in 2016-17 (81 points in 62 GP).

Jorge Figaras-Defensman (Third round, 83rd overall)

Figaras ranked third among OJHL defenders in goals (13), assists (35) and points (48) in 52 games and second in Power-play goals (6). He also scored three points (one goal, two assists) in five play-offs.

Gavin White – Defensesman (Fourth round, 115th overall)

In his first full season with the Bulldogs, White ranked fifth among OHL defenders in assists (46) and eighth in points (56) and finished the 2021-22 campaign ranked seventh among all players in plus-minus (+35). As a member of the Champion OHL Bulldogs, White scored nine points (two goals, seven assists) in 10 post-season games.

Maxim Mayorov – Goaltender (Round 5, 147th overall)

Mayorov made a 14-10-2 record, 2.16 goals-to-average and .931 save percentage in 32 games for Togliatti in the 2021-22 season. The 6-foot-6, 196-pound goalkeeper also played for the Togliatti Under-18 and 16 team from 2019-22.

Matthew Semenov – right wing (Round 6, 179)

Semenov scored 26 goals in his career with the Blazers last season and finished fifth with the team with 57 points in 64 games. He added nine points (six goals, three points) in 17 playoffs.
