Athlon Sports has confirmed that a lot in its pre-season coverage will go into the new season, which is part of the reason why Penn State appears 25th in its full 1-131 FBS rankings for the upcoming season.
Athlon Sports already included Penn State in its top 25 pre-season list, so Nittany Lions’ rank in this full FBS ranking is no surprise. But as an update on what Athlon Sports thinks of Penn State entering the season, here’s some of what the outlet had to say about the Nittnay Lions in 2022;
It’s a crucial year for Penn State to get the program back on track after the 11-11 mark over the past two seasons. Also, after a 5-0 start last fall, the team has gone 2-6 over the last eight games. The opposite of this trend begins with the attack. Quarterback Shaun Clifford should play with more consistency, but the Big also needs more help from a shaky attacking line that has succumbed to the most sacks (44) of any team in the Big Ten. In addition to better pass protection, the line has to improve its blocking after the Nittany Lions failed a 100-yard rusher and only managed 2.96 yards per carry in ’21. Assuming Clifford takes a step forward and the streak is improving, the subtly talented – receiver Parker Washington and talented freshman running back Nick Singleton top the returning playmakers – is there to improve the offense (25 game points last fall).
Athlone Sports went on to note that the defense has some big boots to fill after some roster changes from last year, but Penn State appears to have some suitable alternatives for a solid defensive effort this fall.
