Who will start from Buck’s Corner?

Buck’s corner is one of the most difficult but important positions on the football field, and the pressure will only increase as offensive football continues to develop at a rapid rate. Football in Alabama has seen some amazing corners historically and under coach Nick Saban.

Last year, Crimson Tide had some difficulties with the position. The late Josh Jobe had an injury as well as some style and discipline problems. He was sometimes beaten up for big plays and, more regularly, he was singled out for interfering with passes. Although he wasn’t bad, he didn’t fill Patrick Sartan’s second shoe in the first round of 2021.

On the other side of the field, Tide High School saw more turmoil. Galen Armor Davis was solid but was also injured frequently. Real freshman Kool-Aid McKinstry and JUCO producer Khyree Jackson saw roles increase as a result. They both showed flashes of potential, but they were far from closed corners.

Alabama Soccer: Three Solid Choices

With Jobe and Armor-Davis out of the NFL, McKinstry and Jackson return as leaders of the position group this season.

They were also joined by a transfer to Rex from LSU. Rex was one of the country’s most wanted recruits in the class of 2020.

He started out as a real freshman at Bayou and has shown he can be a star when he’s healthy, scoring five interceptions during his career and two back for touchdowns.

These three will occupy the corner positions for football in Alabama in 2021. The question is, which one will come out of fall camp as a start?

Kool-Aid McKinstry was one of the jewels of the 2021 enlistment class, ranking first in the nation and best player in the state of Alabama. He’s played a lot of shots as a real freshman, and he’s only going to increase his role this year. McKinstry scored a interception against Mercer, his only pick of the season.

Arguably his most influential performance in the classic Iron Bowl against Auburn. He came home on a corner kick, sacking TJ Finley to end Tiger’s campaign at a crucial moment in the third quarter. He later broke up a pass on a two-point conversion in overtime. This would be Auburn’s last offensive strike, putting Alabama in a position to win the match.

Khairy Jackson did not have the notable plays that McKinstry enjoyed. In fact, perhaps his most memorable moment was when he was beaten by the green light in a national championship match.

Regardless, Jackson has quietly been a solid contributor to the team. He was instrumental on special teams for most of the season before being pushed into the line-up at the corner late in the year.

The trio of Jackson, McKinstry, and Rex could be very effective at Tide in 2021. Kool-aid is the least physically impressive of the group standing at 6’1″.

They will also benefit from having incredible talent and experience around them. Alabama football will feature the best dash in college football, as well as two veteran Amanas at the back end. These factors will make life a lot easier for tidal angles.

While these three are highly capable, McKinstry and Rex in particular have the roof to be some of the best defensive linebackers in the country.

No matter who starts, Alabama should have some quality depth in this position and will have an NFL-caliber angle as a no. 3 man on depth chart.
