Bogdanovic adds a much-needed 3-point punch to the Pistons, who finished 29th in the NBA last season with 3 points (32.6%) despite finishing mid-group on 3-point attempts (16). In three seasons with the Jazz (2020-22), Bogdanovic scored 39.7% of his three throws and made 550 of them in that span. He scored 181 three-pointers last season, and he could have finished second to the Pistons behind Bey’s friend (211 three-pointers).
Overall, the 33-year-old Bogdanovic scored 18.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. However, he saw a slight drop in his average scoring each season after posting a career best 20.2 DPI with Utah in 2019-20. Bogdanovic will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Detroit won 23-59 in the 2021-22 season, topping only Houston and Orlando at the bottom of the league standings, but it has hope for the future thanks to a young starting line-up led by second-year guard Cady Cunningham. He overcame an ankle injury that halted his career start to average 17.4 to lead all-rookies, and finished second in his class with 5.6 assists per game and fifth with 5.5 rebounds in 64 games.
Bogdanovic will join the Detroit front-line tournament, which includes former second-placed Marvin Bagley third, as well as youngsters Isaiah Stewart and Bey. A third-year player, Bey averaged a career best at 16.1 ppg and set a one-season Pistons record for 3-pointers. Stewart is a 3 year old senior with bruising and averaged 8.3 ppg, 8.7 rpg and 1.1 bpg in 71 starts.
On the Utah side of things, this is another player added in a busy jazz season. The team dealt with All-Star Center Rudy Gobert and guard Donovan Mitchell in huge separate deals that brought back a host of young assets. Lee, a point guard who averaged 5.6 ppg and 2.9 apg in reserve duty last season, joins a guard corps that includes Colin Sexton, Tallinn Horton Tucker, Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, Malik Beasley and others.
Oleinik is entering his 10th season in the NBA and his fourth season in the NBA in the past two seasons. Signed with Detroit as a free agent in 2021 and averaged 9.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg and 2.8 apg mostly in the Pistons backup. Oleinik is under contract for the next two seasons, but his 2023-24 deal is not fully guaranteed. It’s part of the jazz front yard that has also been renovated and includes names like Jared Vanderbilt, Laurie Markkanen, Udoka Azuboyeki, and rookie Walker Kessler.
