Ilya Samsonov refused more years with another team to bet on himself with the Maple Leafs

Ilya Samsonov was a bit surprised when Washington Capitals chose not to make a qualifying bid for him this summer, especially when GM Brian McClellan initially intended to do so.

“It’s just business,” he said Thursday.

Once considered the future number one goalkeeper when they drafted him in the first round (22) overall in the 2015 NHL Draft, Samsonov has struggled to find traction over the years. Despite scoring last season 23-12-5, the Russian finished his career low with 896%.
