Report: Miami Dolphins Among Teams Sean Payton Will Be Interested In

Sean Payton, the former New Orleans Saints head coach, indicated that among the jobs he might be interested in would be with the Miami Dolphins.

Payton’s comment has supposedly shocked most people as odd since he was rumored to be in line to replace Brian Flores as Dolphins head coach last January. Reportedly, the rumor in question was coming from Payton and Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tom Brady to the Dolphins.

After these rumors surfaced, Payton said he had no knowledge of any such plan. For this year, he’s working as part of the Fox NFL Sunday squad.

The Dolphins eventually appointed Mike McDaniel as their new head coach, a decision that began with a promise after two wins to start the 2022 season.

Also, the alleged plan to bring in Brady would have removed Tua Tagovailoa as the Dolphins’ captain. After a brief retirement, Brady was once again playing in the middle of the Buccaneers, while Tagoviloa was coming off his best-ever NFL performance after throwing 469 yards and six touchdowns.

Payton retired after last season after coaching the New Orleans Saints over 15 seasons. During the 2012 campaign, he was suspended for a full year for his role in the bounty scandal that was said to have sought to infect players from other teams.

legacy of success

Of course, there is no guarantee that Payton will be hired by another team. However, his career record indicates that the 58-year-old mentor will have a strong calling card for another major coaching job.

During those fifteen years with the Saints, Payton amassed a solid record of 152-89, winning 10 or more games in nine different seasons. In each of those double-digit seasons, the Saints made it to the post-season.

On three different occasions under Payton, the Saints reached the NFC Championship, winning in January 2010. Two weeks after that victory, they captured Super Bowl XLIV with a shock 31-17 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

It is envisaged that a position at Dolphins could be developed that would allow Payton to join the team. In terms of potential training opportunities with the Dolphins, Payton made his reputation on the offensive side of the ball.

The truth now is that Dolphins are not looking for a new head coach. It suggests that if Payton returns to training next year, he is unlikely to be on Dolphin’s sidelines.
