Mickelson started the first round of the 2001 PGA Championship with an impressive 66. He was one of the nine golfers who did it. However, he continued to play his best, while most of the others fell behind, which left him hoping to win his first major.

He scored 66-66-66-68 in four rounds, and scoring such low scores in a major is anything but impressive. However, all he could secure was a solo runner-up at the 2001 PGA Championship. American golfer David Toms won the title by a single shot ahead of Mickelson.

“I’m trying to win a bunch of majors,” Mickelson said after the big competition. “And having so much difficulty with the first is frustrating.”
