9 prospects for FCS over FBS for the 2022 college football season

FCS vs. FBS matches are back in 2022. After 12 FCS teams pulled off FBS upsets last year, which teams could be next? Here are nine potential FCS due FBS upsets for the 2022 college football season.

Week 1

Bryant at FIU | Thursday 1st September | 7 p.m. ET

FIU finished 1-11 last year, with its only win over LIU, a school Bryant defeated by 45 points. In 2022, Bryant brings back quarterback Zevi Eckhaus, a signal connective who is entering his second season and could lead the Bulldogs to an upset.

FCS-FBS: Here’s every FCS vs. FBS match scheduled for 2022

Central Connecticut at UConn | Saturday 3 September | 12 p.m. ET

UConn lost to Holy Cross last year and since 2018 has beaten FCS opponents by an average of just 5.3 points. That’s a good sign for the Central Connecticut team that recently won the NEC title in 2019.

South Dakota in Iowa Saturday, Sept. 3 | 12 p.m. ET

The last time Iowa lost to an FCS opponent was in 2016. The Hawkeyes were ranked No. 13 when they lost to MVFC powerhouse North Dakota State. Fast forward to 2022 and another MVFC powerhouse, South Dakota State, is heading to Iowa. This time, Hawkeyes is unranked.

University of California Davis at Cal | Saturday 3 September | 4 p.m. ET

Cal finished 2021 with a 5-7 record. UC Davis finished 2021 in the FCS Playoffs. Led by one of football’s top players in Olonzo Gilliam Jr., UC Davis proved they had what it takes to shock the Golden Bears last year when they landed their first FCS-over-FBS upset of the season.

Week 2

Holy Cross in Buffalo | Saturday 10 September | 6 p.m. ET

Holy Cross is a three-time defending Patriot League champion, led by a dominant defense and returning quarterback in Matthew Sluka Jr. The Crusaders visit a Buffalo team that finished 4-8 last year, losing to teams like Nebraska. This game screams upset.

the third week

Montana Oregon | Saturday 17 September | 8 p.m. ET

Oregon finished with its first winning season in eight years in 2021. The Beavers host FCS runner-up Montana State in Week 3, a team that consistently ranks among the best in the subdivision. We’ll find out if Oregon State’s success in 2021 was a sign of progress or a flash in the pan quickly when the Bobcats come to town.

North Dakota Arizona | Saturday 17 September | 11 p.m. ET

Arizona State was 1-11 in 2021, finishing as one of the worst teams in the FBS. North Dakota finished as the best team in the FCS, winning its ninth title in 11 years. The last time the Bison played an FBS opponent, they upset a ranked team. Not a good sign if you’re a Wildcat fan and hoping for an easy win.

fourth week

Chattanooga, Illinois | Thursday 22 September | 8:30 p.m. ET

Illinois finished 2021 with a 5-7 record, but three of its wins were on one possession. Meanwhile, Chattanooga is a projected SoCon favorite, coming off a 6-5 season. With All Americans on the offensive and defensive lines, the Mocs are sized to match and compete with the Illini and potentially land.

Sacramento, Colorado | Saturday 24 September | 5 p.m. ET

Colorado State lost 19 points to FCS opponents in 2021 en route to the season 3-9. Sacramento State is the Big Sky champion. These are two teams heading in opposite directions entering the season. The fourth week contains all the ingredients for turmoil.
