Blue Jackets’ Jake Christiansen, Kent Johnson, brings friendship to the ice

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kent Johnson, seen here during a game in October, is happy playing in the National Hockey League with his best hometown defenseman, defenseman Jake Christiansen.

When Jake Christiansen was called up by the Blue Jackets on November 11, he arrived at the team’s hotel in New York late in the evening, only to find one of his teammates waiting to greet him.

But it wasn’t just any of his teammates. His countryman was Kent Johnson from Vancouver. After becoming good friends “three or four years ago” in Johnson’s estimation, the two now enjoy playing together at the NHL level.

“Kent was one of my best buddies back home, so when I told him I was coming, he was delighted,” Christiansen said.

Christiansen and Johnson became close during a summer skiing in Vancouver long before they were members of the Blue Jackets organization. At the time, Christiansen was playing hockey with the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League, and Johnson was playing in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Trail Smoke Eaters.
