Bubba Wallace announced his position on the “finger” incident in 2019: “Hell, if Kyle Bush..”

In 2019, at Pocono Raceway, Bubba Wallace appears to have given fellow competitor Daniel Suarez the finger near the end of the race. Later, however, Wallace cleared the air between what happened and emphasized that he did not mean he was ill against the Mexican-born driver.

Wallace said during an interview later: “It’s okay with that. I’d tell him it’s number one—that’s fine.”

Later, Suarez took to social media to explain what happened and what they argued about. He said in a comment: “We’re still friends, we raced hard to get to the white flag, and then he gave me… where did I come from kick somebody (the peach symbol) so, just tell him not to show me that finger again.”

Suarez may have found Wallace’s humor a little inappropriate from the point of view of cultural difference. The duo even got into an argument after the race at Pocono, with the two being vocal about their issues. Wallace was mostly smiling the entire time and the couple seemed to resolve their issues without further conflict.

Wallace was not apologetic about his gesture. Instead, he said how he found it funny, and not the other way around. He mentioned how he would be comfortable giving his finger to drivers he personally likes. He also stated that Suarez was not the first to receive this gesture. And he does it to lighten the mood in the nature of intense competition.

Wallace further stated, “I do it for the guys that I like and can race. Hell, if Kyle Busch or Martin Truex Jr. were coming to court us, I’d give them the finger. That’s fun. We’ll talk about it and laugh about it afterwards.”

Sure, maybe just a casual thing Wallace does among his friends. However, since NASCAR is something that is broadcast to a wide audience, such gestures can usually lead to controversy and confusion among fans. The Suarez feud finally came to a resolution and the couple remain friends to this day.
