Democratic candidates for Michigan’s House and Senate won the majority of votes this year, resulting in their party winning control of both legislatures. This may seem like a natural outcome, but it wasn’t in a previous election.

While Democrats also won a majority of votes in 2018 and 2020, Republicans won a majority in the legislature. The difference this time around: Candidates ran in new districts drawn by the Citizens Committee rather than districts drafted by Republican lawmakers designed to help keep their party in power.
