The Chicago Bears are reportedly heading for a major lineup change

The Chicago Bears approached 2022 with a clear agenda. It wasn’t about competing for a championship this season. GM Ryan Boles and head coach Matt Eberflus blew the roster, canceled contracts, and added several young bodies. This includes several previous high draft options. The idea was simple. Give young people opportunities to make an impression. Anyone who does can find themselves a part of the big picture after this season. Now with the team 3-8 and out of the playoff picture, this task should probably take a higher priority.

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune believed that one unresolved subplot would soon come to a head. The Bears made a surprise move when they claimed first-round pick Alex Leatherwood on waivers from Las Vegas. The Alabama product had a difficult rookie season for the Raiders and did not impress the new system. Unable to find a trading partner, they choose to cut their losses. The Poles felt that the talent Leatherwood possessed was worth claiming. Since then, the 23-year-old has spent time learning the offense and improving his game. From what Biggs wrote in his latest column, it looks like he might see action soon.

It’s just a matter of where and when.

The other player I’m still curious about is Alex Leatherwood. At some point, the bears have to give him a chance β€” and more than just a game or two, right? My hunch is that he could make the right tacklebut anything is possible and the bears have hinted at some positional diversity.

“Actually, we really like where he is,” Matt Eberflus said last week. β€œHe’s really starting to feel his way in this role, playing inside or outside, whatever that is, he understands the offense. And you can really see his confidence starting to build. Men feel comfortable. He’s starting to make some big strides. ”

Offensive line coach Chris Morgan hit some similar notes when talking about Leatherwood.

“He’s starting to get a little more comfortable on offense, a little more comfortable with calls, and he’s shown some versatility as we move around a little bit,” Morgan said Thursday. “We are excited (with) where he is. “

The Chicago Bears have an opportunity coming up soon.

Leatherwood has always had great talent. His problems in Las Vegas were technical in nature. It had several problems with its basics. The Raiders made matters worse by constantly leaving him in one-on-one situations. It was no surprise that his confidence seemed to suffer as a result. Now he has a fresh start without the stress of being the first round in over his head. He had about three months to digest the offense. If the bears want to give him a chance, the timing is almost right to do so.

Next week against the Jets may not be ideal. He’s on the road in front of a really good defensive front. There is a home game against Green Bay next. If not, the ideal scenario is after the bye week against Philadelphia. He’ll have two weeks to get himself ready, and he’ll be home. He’ll then have four games to get his feet under his feet and give the Bears a nice piece of tape to evaluate before laying out their plans for the offseason β€” something to watch in the coming weeks.
