Washington (AFP) – Democrats have secured their majority in the Senate over the next two years. But holding onto Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock’s seat in the Georgia runoff next month could be crucial to their success.

If Warnock wins the runoff against Republican Herschel Walker, the Democrats will take 51 seats. That would make legislation much easier than it is in the current 50-to-50 Senate, which is the narrowest possible balance of power. For the past two years, Democrats have had to rely on Vice President Kamala Harris — who is the speaker of the Senate — to cut ties.
