Community Kiwanis Meal

The Florence Kiwanis are serving their annual Thanksgiving meal today with about 750 meals planned. This year the meal was noticeably turkey-less. According to Kiwanis Club officials, this is mainly due to the amount of turkey on hand when planning the meal. This year’s bird outbreak depleted some 7.3 million birds from the supply chain, which is almost a 20% decrease from last year. The shortage also drove up the price of turkeys. The average price for a 16-pound turkey in 2021 was about $23. Depending on where you shop, that cost could have doubled this year although the deals are still out there even at your local Fred Meyer, safeway, and Grocery Outlet. The rising cost of groceries across the board has effectively pushed up the price of the annual meal with items like eggs, dairy and fresh vegetables.

busy traffic

Heavy traffic is still on the minds of holiday travelers. Reports of delays and rushes of motorists were plentiful yesterday with more of the same today. AAA Oregon has estimated that about one million Oregonians travel this holiday and Sunday is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year and even of the last ten years. Gas prices continued to fall over the travel weekend. The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Florence is $4.33 a gallon. Three weeks ago, gas prices in Florence were above $4.75.

Free catch

While family and friends are visiting for the Thanksgiving holiday, it would be a good time to introduce them to the outdoors. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife holds a free weekend of fishing on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. No lobster, clam, or fishing license is required, but restrictions do apply. If you haven’t been robbed by many of the local businesses, lobster trap rentals are available. Jay Cable of Bridgeport Market and Wine Shoppe says they always see rents increase during their free weekends. And no boat access is necessary… Old town crabs near ICM and the end of Mo’s wharf can be seen reaping their fair share. According to crab experts, the best time to fish for crabs is during low tide when the water is calmest for crustaceans.

RSV isn’t something that just appeared on the horizon. It’s a regular occurrence during cold and flu season, and it’s just been tagged with a new three-letter moniker. They see it every year, says Dr. Willie Foster of Peace Harbor Hospital, but this year the emergence of the respiratory virus came faster and heavier than usual. It’s usually seen in younger children according to Foster who heads the emergency department at Peace Harbor, but it’s becoming more prevalent among adults this season. He says it can lead to serious illness in adults and children. Symptoms include a high fever, difficulty breathing, and signs of dehydration. Emergency room visits for RSV are increasing in Florence, Foster says, get your flu shot, update your coronavirus vaccine and wear a mask when you have symptoms.
