The Texans’ 23-10 loss at home to the Washington Chiefs dropped them to 1-8-1, cementing their worst record in the league. Lack of effort and frustration made it a challenge to stay optimistic with seven games left in the season.
The Texans struggled on offense, totaling only 148 yards of offense and converting 2 of 13 to third down. Sunday marked the ninth time in 10 weeks that Houston has scored 20 points or fewer, as well as the sixth time this season that they have scored 17 or fewer points. At quarterback, Davis Mills has now been benched in favor of Kyle Allen. Last week Mills completed 19 of 33 pass attempts, totaling 169 yards without a touchdown and made two interceptions. Mills has been sacked five times by the Leaders’ talented defensive line.
A former member of the Washington franchise, Allen completed 63 percent of his passes for 4,318 yards with 24 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in his career.
Houston will have its hands full with Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, as well as one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL in Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.
If the NFL season were to end today, Texas would own the first overall pick of the draft, and the Dolphins, meanwhile, are at the helm of the highly competitive AFC East division.
Injury update: Derek Stingley Jr.’s situation against the Miami Dolphins is up in the air. The Houston Texans’ No. 3 draft pick was sidelined with a hamstring injury in Sunday’s loss.
In other news: Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson returned to practice last week after serving 11 NFL games. His first game was against his former team, the Houston Texans, on December 4 at NRG Stadium.

The final word: Quarterback Davis Mills believes the team’s mentality is enough to keep the franchise optimistic.
“Any team can win this league,” Mills said. “We’ve got a lot of really talented players who know what they have to do to win games. We just have to put it all together. It’s right foot before left. We’re coming to work, we’re going to look for a way to win games.”
