Arizona Cardinals fire Sean Kugler after an incident in Mexico City
Flush was the favorite word used by Arizona Cardinals coach Cliff Kingsbury in response to his team’s recent embarrassing performance.
I’ve spoken out several times on the subject of pressuring the Arizona Cardinals to fire head coach Cliff Kingsbury. Obviously, when ownership signed Kliff and General Manager Steve Kim to contract extensions through 2027, they were expecting to do better than the team is currently at 4-7.
While the Cardinals are still athletic in the playoff race, they’ll need to win and hope some teams struggled through the last seven weeks of the season to get a chance here. The law of probability states that this will not happen.
It also states that given Kingsbury’s extension, the Cardinals will look for every excuse to retain their head coach. But should they? Especially if it looked like Sean Payton might be interested in the Cardinals job?
Why the Arizona Cardinals need to get rid of Cliff Kingsbury
It’s been 11 weeks, and we’ve seen nothing but utter dysfunction under Kingsbury. Here are just a few of the coaches’ mishaps this season:
- Regression of Kyler Murray
- poor connection
- Bad game management
- A failed 4-down conversion resulted in opponents short fields and points
- Bench productive players and in one instance cut them
- Dodging questions during press conferences
I’m sure you could add more to the list, but you know what I’m getting at. And with all of the aforementioned grievances, it’s hard to find any improvement in Kingsbury’s 2022 campaign. You could nominally say that the Cardinals have shown flashes of brilliance at times this season, but those flashes are as rare as seeing lightning in the middle of winter.
Generally speaking, when a coach’s production falls off a cliff, they often don’t stay for another season, no matter what their contract says. For Kliff Kingsbury, that could easily be the case, especially if it’s a proven good that wants the job.
