7 must-have tools for golfers

Without generalizing widely, golf for women is different in many ways. There are some great tools that can make the game of golf more enjoyable for any player. Anything to make the game easier, less challenging, and more practical will always catch my eye. During my years coaching women, I’ve fallen in love with many pieces of equipment, but these are some of my favourites.

A good warm-up and exercise help

Encourages movement and an athletic figure

Reasons to avoid

Regular use is the key to avoiding bad habits

The Orange Whip is my all time favorite training aid. You simply need to swing this back and forth and it will guide your golf course to a brighter course. Available in various lengths, the medium size is aimed at golfers with a slower swing speed. The weighted finish and soft shaft really accentuate the follow-through, which is an element many women struggle with. The whip encourages a more athletic stance on the outside, then when momentum is gathered, weight transfer is ignited and more club speed occurs when it’s needed. You don’t need to think too technical about this, it’s just repetition.

Slightly softer feel than regular gloves

Having a good group means you can really play in all conditions. These gloves from FootJoy are a complete game changer when it comes to wet golf. They’re breathable, thanks to QuikDry knits, and the Autosuede palms actually get even more moisture-wicking. No more clubs being tossed down the aisle. This is a great feature and is ideal for any golfer in all weather. I love the white pair because often these pairs of gloves come in black. White is very elegant and will help you gain a significant advantage when conditions deteriorate.

Mood with alignment

Taking your game to the track from the range is tough. This great set of tools is an investment but it will teach you your yardage. Most important, however, are the distances Andyk holds and those half and three quarter shots. It connects to the Garmin app on your phone and you can see your results instantly. You’ll really start shooting less with this knowledge under your belt. If you want to have fun practicing, the app comes with 42,000 courses worldwide, so you can literally play a round at the range or at home in your living room! It’s water resistant, voice activated, has an impressive 10 hours of battery life and comes in a pretty smart case.

Perfect for those winter months

Requires a USB port in your cart

There is nothing worse on the golf course than not being able to feel your fingers. This is a total game changer for me. I actually use them in conjunction with my FootJoy winter gloves so my hands stay warm the whole time on the golf course. You can charge it via a USB port available on Motocaddy Carts and other brands that host this facility. You can also use it with a regular USB power bank if you don’t own a motocaddy. These make touring in icy conditions or with an icy breeze that much more welcome. There are even three heat settings, so a little warmer or oven is at hand!

Heavy duty materials

Can be used anywhere

Reasons to avoid

You need to fill the bag by yourself

This bag intimidates some of the women I study, but it doesn’t have to be packed with loads of old towels. Fill it in more precisely and you’ll still be able to get the same results without feeling like your wrists are fading away. I often use these balls like medicine balls, to throw in the trunk of my car as a warm-up exercise. This encourages women to use less dominant arm movements to hit shots and more powerful driving with their bodies. The Smash Bag can also be smashed but with smaller swings, to make a strong contact without wrists. This mini set really helps improve your striking position and will work your big muscles up your yardage.

Not as good without the full investment of PuttOut Home Practice Studio

This PuttOut Pro Mat is my favorite. Using the fetch mat at home promotes confidence with strokes and shorter strokes and can also be a great way to pause and grab some headspace. Combine with PuttOut Pro Putting Gates and you can have hours of fun with the family or actually quietly on your own. It’s even available in four color options to match your decor.
